North Solihull Singers was started by local musician and teacher Kris Chase-Byrne, back in 2006, when he was approached to start a community choir at Chelmsley Wood Baptist Church – a suggestion that was inspired by the TV series ‘The Singing Estate’ which gave Gareth Malone his fame. Kris took on the challenge, and at the first meeting, 6 local people attended. Over the next few weeks, the group, even at this small size, started to show real signs of being something special. They took part in local performances, just performing 1 or 2 simple songs, but with great reception from those who heard them sing.
After a short while, we held an open rehearsal/workshop event, which was attended by an additional 25-30 people, from the immediate local area, and further afield. After a few weeks we settled to a steady number of around 20. Realising that this was to become something really special in the Chelmsley Wood area, we formalised things a little, and became an established group. Since then, numbers of members have grown, and we are making our mark and having a great impact in the local community. We hold and host several fundraising events, and have raised sever thousand pounds for local organisations and causes.
As a choir, now standing at over 40 members from right across the West Midlands, we perform in 3 major concerts of our own each year, in various venues around North Solihull, usually with a live band and often invite other performers to join us at our concerts – including the choir from The Streetly Academy and students from Grace Academy. Over the last few years, we have enjoyed receiving many invites to perform at events, dinners, a wedding or 2, and many other concerts.
We are a very friendly bunch of people, who operate a ‘no audition, no experience’ policy, with one goal – to sing, and enjoy singing.
We rehearse every Tuesday evening, at Three Trees Centre, Hedingham Grove, Chelsmley Wood, B37 7TP from 7:45 – 9:45pm. Everyone welcome – just turn up!
